Iron-deficiency anemia in a nutshell
Iron-deficiency anemia is a type of anemia caused by insufficient iron intake or, alternatively, inadequate absorption relative to its elimination. Iron deficiency is the most common cause of anemia, but anemia can also be associated with a deficiency in B12 vitamin and folic acid.
What on earth is anemia?
In anemia, the hemoglobin level in the blood is lower than normal, which impairs the transport of oxygen in the body. Causes of iron deficiency can include, among other things, inadequate nutrition or absorption disorders. In addition, heavy menstrual periods in women aged 15-50, or alternatively, bleeding in the stomach, intestines, or from hemorrhoids, can lead to anemia.
What are the symptoms of anemia?
Symptoms of anemia can include, for example, fatigue, dizziness, shortness of breath, and reduced performance. Additionally, brittle nails and hair, or more pronounced breathlessness, can be indicative of anemia. However, it's important to note that iron deficiency without anemia can also present with very similar symptoms as anemia.
How is iron-deficiency anemia diagnosed?
Iron deficiency is diagnosed through blood tests. In addition to a complete blood count, ferritin and transferrin receptor levels are examined. For example, from Puhti, you can find a comprehensive iron-deficiency and anemia test package.
How is iron-deficiency anemia treated?
Primarily, it's important to identify the cause of the iron deficiency. Iron-deficiency anemia is treated with iron supplements if the iron obtained from the diet is insufficient. In more severe cases, a doctor may also refer a patient for correction of iron stores through intravenous iron infusion. If you suspect you have iron-deficiency anemia, it's always important to discuss with your doctor before starting iron supplements.
